Verification
How verification works
Most users verify with a quick selfie. When the result or the law calls for more, AgeWallet runs a real ID check automatically.
Face estimation with 3D liveness
The user takes a selfie. 3D liveness detection analyzes facial depth to confirm a real, present person, not a photo, screen or mask, and AI estimates their age.
Clear results finish instantly
Clearly over the age threshold: verified. Clearly under: declined. Thresholds are set per jurisdiction, including higher challenge ages where the law requires them.
A real ID check when required
Borderline results, and jurisdictions that mandate ID, go to government ID verification. The date of birth is checked against local rules and the ID photo is matched to the selfie. See supported documents.
Age estimation accuracy
Mean absolute error is the average gap between the estimated and the real age. It is smallest for under-18s, the group age checks exist to stop.
- 1.5 yrsAverage error for under-18s
- 3.5 yrsAverage error across all ages
- 89%Of estimates within 5 years
- 76%Of estimates within 3 years
| Age group | Average error |
|---|---|
| Under 18 | 1.5 years |
| 18–25 | 2.8 years |
| 26–40 | 3.2 years |
| 41–60 | 3.9 years |
| 60+ | 4.5 years |
Published benchmarks for the age estimation model AgeWallet uses. Estimation is never used on its own where the law requires an ID check.
